Million-dollar compensation awarded to victim of dog attack

In a settlement recently approved by the Los Angeles City Council, Van Nuys woman Argelia Alvarado will receive $7.5 million in compensation for a brutal attack she suffered in September 2020.

Alvarado, 74, was attacked in her backyard by a pit bull named O’Gee, an incident that resulted in the amputation of her arm.

The dog had been adopted by her son, Brent, from the city’s East Valley Animal Shelter in May 2020.

Unfortunately, O’Gee had a troubling history, as he arrived at the shelter after biting a runner on both arms.

The lawsuit filed by Alvarado and his family outlined the errors and negligence that occurred.

The next day, another supervisor allowed the dog to be listed for public adoption, regardless of its bite history.

Concern over the status of shelters in California

The lawsuit alleged that shelter staff failed to provide Brent Alvarado with written notice of the animal’s bite history, as required by state law.

The failure to comply with state regulations worked in favor of the victim in the case, as the adopter was not informed of the potential danger posed by the dog.

The attack on the woman was brutal and lasted about 20 minutes, according to the lawsuit.

During this time, both arms were severely injured. The right one was shattered and almost completely severed above the elbow, while the left one also suffered severe damage, resulting in a permanent disability.

Animal advocates and city employees have expressed concern about the state of California’s shelters.

They reported problems of overcrowding and danger that could have contributed to the attack, reports Tv Azteca.
