Last Friday, January 12, Bolivian police intercepted a high-end vehicle in the city of Santa Cruz, in which two young people were transporting a million dollars in cash, without a customs declaration, which might possibly be linked to illicit activities linked to drug trafficking.
Ten days later, the vice minister of the Interior Regime and Police of the neighboring country, Jhonny Aguilera, stated that that money would have left the vaults of a branch of the Santander bank in Iquique, and would have entered the country illegally.
Asked regarding this situation, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, questioned this information, assuring that in the coming days more information on the matter will be requested from the Bolivian authorities.
“These antecedents have been pointed out in Bolivia. Chile does not know of any of these antecedents, we are going to ask the Bolivian authorities who have pointed out this theory for more information, because there is no antecedents in the hands of any of our organizations to make that connection,” he responded.
On the other hand, and according to the media La Razón, the Bolivian government formally requested information from the Chilean bank regarding the owner of the account, from which the million dollars was withdrawn; in addition to requiring images of the person who did it.
It should be noted that, once the vehicle with the million dollars was discovered, the police officers who carried out the inspection stole the money. The next day, three lawyers tried to recover the amount, admitting that they were the owners. Given this, three police officials claimed to have been threatened by unknown persons, returning the money, which implied that they were formalized and sent to preventive detention for the crime of concussion.
The same sanction was imposed on one of the three lawyers, who would be the “front man” of the true owners of the money who, until now, have not been identified.
