Timo Meier is next
Million blessings for Swiss NHL stars
Payday for strong performance. The eight Swiss in the NHL have signed contracts worth a total of 230 million dollars.
In the past season, Jonas Siegenthaler was one of the players with the best value for money in the NHL. For the relatively meager salary of 1.05 million in the best league, he was on the ice for more than 20 minutes per game with the New Jersey Devils and inspired the analytics community with excellent defensive values.
The 25-year-old from Zurich has now been rewarded for this. The Devils extended his contract, which runs for another year, early. And in five years. During this period he will collect 17 million. On average, his salary has tripled.
The defender is already the fourth Swiss player to sign a new contract this summer. Kevin Fiala (26) hit the jackpot when he signed a 7-year contract worth 55.125 million when he moved from Minnesota to the Los Angeles Kings. Of the Swiss, only Nashville captain Roman Josi (32) has an even better endowed contract (8 years/72.472 million).
Malgin collects the NHL minimum wage
Thanks to Josi’s brokerage skills, his buddy Nino Niederreiter (30) also found accommodation in Nashville for 4 million a year. Denis Malgin (26), meanwhile, returns to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the NHL minimum wage of 750,000.
The contracts of the Swiss NHL stars

However, Timo Meier will be the best paid next season. In the last year of his contract, his salary increases to 10 million. And the 25-year-old goalgetter can already rub his hands. After his best season (35 goals, 76 points), the Appenzeller has the best cards in his hand in the forthcoming negotiations for a contract extension.
If the San Jose Sharks do not want to lose the rights to the Swiss striker, they would have to make him a so-called “qualifying offer” next summer, which would at least correspond to the wages of the last year of the contract, ie 10 million. But one can assume that the Californians don’t want to let it get that far and will try to bind Meier for the long term ahead of time.
The big payday beckons Meier
If they don’t succeed, the signs are goodbye for the power striker. He would probably be transferred like Fiala and Matthew Tkachuk (from the Calgary Flames to the Florida Panthers). The American signed an 8-year contract worth 76 million.
More regarding the Swiss NHL stars
Even if Meier’s next contract is likely to be lower, he will be able to increase his average annual salary (currently 6 million) and the contract volume of the NHL Swiss will increase significantly. It is currently at 230 million.
