Round Lake Beach Police have charged a man identified as Jason Karels, 35, with the murder of his three children. The man admitted that he drowned them, for which he faces first-degree murder charges.

When the police arrived, they found three children, identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office as 5-year-old Bryant Karels, 3-year-old Cassidy Karels, and 2-year-old Gideon Karels. Preliminary autopsies indicate that they drowned.

Police on the scene discovered that the father, a 35-year-old former US Army member, was missing along with his car.l, so he set up a raid to stop him. Once the car was identified, he began a high-speed pursuit that would end in a crash in a wooded area off I-80 in Joliet.

“After the accident, Karels made statements to police officers involved in the pursuit and wearing body cameras indicating that he was responsible for the deaths of the children at the Round Lake Beach home.”said Round Lake Beach Police Chief Gilbert Rivera. “He also said that he attempted suicide several times following the children’s deaths, but was unsuccessful during these attempts.

Rivera said authorities received a request at 1:40 pm last Monday to conduct a wellness check inside a home. The request came from the children’s mother, who “was supposed to pick up the children”, but she never received a response, so she entered the house, where she discovered the macabre scene.

“He entered the house” and discovered the bodies of his children, according to Rivera. The officer added that the parents shared custody of the children but did not live together. Rivera said he did not know his marital status.

The coroner confirmed that the three children were children of Karels. It was unclear where she drowned them, and authorities said they were not aware of any previous domestic problems at the home. Rivera said police had no history with the family.

Karels, who remains hospitalized, was charged with three counts of murder. Authorities said his condition has stabilized and he is expected to be released from the hospital soon.
