Asuncion, IP Agency.- Argentine government sources confirmed that President Javier Milei will not attend the Mercosur Summit of Heads of State, scheduled for this Monday, July 8, in Paraguay.
The information was confirmed on Monday by presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni. “The president, due to agenda issues, will not attend the Mercosur summit as planned,” he said at a press conference, following having announced days earlier that he would attend.
The Argentine president’s agenda includes, instead, a participation in the Conservative Action Political Conference (CPAC), in the resort of Camboriú, on Saturday, July 6, where the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, will be present.
Monday’s summit would be Javier Milei’s first since assuming the presidency on December 10. The Argentine president has been in public conflict with the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whom he has attacked on repeated occasions and referred to as a “corrupt communist.”
The Brazilian president, for his part, said in a recent interview that he has not yet had an official conversation with his Argentine counterpart since December. “I have not spoken with the Argentine president because I think he has to apologize to Brazil and to me, he has said a lot of nonsense, I just want him to apologize.”
Instead of President Milei, Foreign Minister Diana Mondino will participate as a representative of the neighboring country.
During the next Summit of Heads of State of Mercosur, Paraguay will hand over the pro tempore presidency to Argentina for the next six months.
