Argentine President Javier Milei is facing his second general strike since taking office on Thursday, which has paralyzed transportation services and educational institutions, financial institutions and businesses across the country.
The General Confederation of Labor (CGT), Argentina’s main labor union, hopes to paralyze the country in opposition to the structural reforms that the Executive seeks to implement.
According to EFE, unlike in January, the main novelty is the suspension of public transport – both buses, subways and trains – which at the beginning of the year only stopped following 7:00 p.m.
In addition to state workers and the Unión Tranviarios Automotor (UTA), the union was joined by the Banking Association, which brings together employees of financial institutions; the Central de Trabajadores de la Argentina (CTA-T), which groups together different economic activities; and commercial employees under the Federación Argentina de Empleados de Comercio y Servicios (Faecys).
Commercial air and cargo transport, banking, commerce (mostly), education and waste collection will also be halted, while the health sector will provide minimal attention, prioritising any emergency.
Protest once morest tax cuts
The unions are protesting once morest the severe austerity imposed by Milei’s policies and the structural reforms included in the Law of Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines, the president’s flagship project.
Among the reforms included in the law that has already been partially approved by the House of Representatives and is now awaiting consideration in the Senate are the delegation of legislative powers to the Executive, the privatization of companies, the establishment of a special investment regime and a labor reform, called “modernization.”
One of the most worrying chapters for the unions is the possible privatization of public companies, as well as the extension of the trial periods that companies might impose following the approval of the bill and the modification of severance pay.
