This week the Jewish community released a statement once morest Javier Milei in which they expressed their “concern regarding the expressions of hate” of the candidate with the most votes in the PASO and disapproved of what they consider the “political use of Judaism, its texts and its symbols” by the libertarian reference. The document has more than 3,000 signatures corresponding to intellectuals, artists and members of the Jewish community who unified their voice once morest the advance of a set of ideas that they described as “anti-democratic” y “deniers”.
“Jews from Argentina affirm: Milei does not represent us”expressed members of the community by virtue of “Javier Milei’s use of Judaism to support hate speech.”
The publication was spread online through the official Meretz Argentina account (@MeretzArgentina) and contains a link to access the full content of the letter.
Cecilia Roth, Julia Zenko, Peter Cahn, Richard Forster and Tamara Tenembaum They are some of the most resonant names that make up the list of signatories that sought to clarify their position regarding the liberal economist and presidential candidate.
The document in question highlighted that Milei, within the framework of his presidential campaign, had “statements of discriminatory, misogynistic content, contrary to sexual diversity, political plurality, and democratic coexistence in general“.
“His attack on Pope Francis must also be condemned.offending him and, through him, millions of faithful,” the signatories of the letter warned.
in the letter Milei’s running mate, Victoria Villarruel, was also mentioned.considered “the main figure of the denialism in our country and in defense of a dictatorship that had a proven anti-Semitic character by being especially cruel to missing people of Jewish origin.
In that sense, the Jewish community focused on recent statements by Villarruel directed “at an undisputed reference in the fight for human rights like Estela de Carlotto.”
“There is the particularity,” members of the community remarked, “that Milei claims to study the Torah assiduously, included the tallit and the shofar in his campaign closing ceremony prior to the PASO, frequently quotes Jewish sources and makes references to characters like Moshe, among other acts.”
Milei and his relationship with Judaism: “fanaticism” for the Jewish people, daily reading of the Torah and promises with Israel
“Our Judaism is at the opposite end of Javier Milei and his political project,” they stressed in the letter.
“We want to express clearly: the Jewish ethics that we learned and that we aspire to put into practice in our lives is closely linked to the notion of equality and social justice, the same one that Milei calls aberrant. Therefore, Our Judaism is at the antipodes of Javier Milei and his political project“, they indicated in the request that contains more than 3,700 signatures.
They also accused Milei of decontextualize religious passages for their electoral purposes.
“The prophet Amos, the same one who Milei decontextualizes in his campaign material, was the one who denounced the inequality between the rich and poor of his town. Another prophet, Isaiah, harshly criticized those who fasted following the religious ritual without seeing the need to free the oppressed from their yoke and help the needy,” detailed the signatories of the community.
Likewise, the statement warned that certain ideological expressions by Milei would threaten all citizens, Jews and non-Jews.
“Milei’s references to the “aesthetic superiority” of the right and its announced fight once morest “cultural Marxism” (a concept of undoubted anti-Semitic origins) must function as a wake-up call for everyone, Jewish or notthose of us who are committed to peaceful coexistence and dialogue,” they warned.
On the other hand, they added that the economist “states that Israel will be one of his main allies and would move the embassy to Jerusalem in an eventual government under his control. We have already seen how political projects with similar characteristics in other places in the world, identified with Israel , harbored within them clearly anti-Semitic expressions, and supporters of other forms of racism and discrimination, which grew under their protection.”
