Milei and her new boards

On Wednesday, January 7, from Israel, upon seeing that his omnibus law did not receive unequivocal approval in Congress, President Milei posted a text in Hebrew that, translated according to the Reina Valera version, reads as follows:

“And it came to pass, when he came to the camp, and saw the calf and the dancing, that Moses’ anger burned, and he threw the tables out of his hands, and broke them at the foot of the mountain.”

“And he took the calf which they had made, and burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it upon the waters, and gave it to the children of Israel to drink.”

“Moses stood at the gate of the camp, and said, Who is for the Lord? Join me. And all the sons of Levi gathered around him.”

They are verses 20, 21 and 26 of the Old Testament, which relate the anger of Moses when, upon coming down from Mount Sinai with the Tables of the Law received from God, he finds that his people worship a golden calf that he had erected. , with the consent of his brother Aaron, as the new god. Before this scene posted by Milei, the Bible tells how, while they were up there, God told Moses that the people had become corrupt and had asked him – He to his prophet – to let “My anger burn against them.” and consume them and make of you a great nation.” Moses calms him down and stops him for the moment and “God repents of the evil that he said he was going to do to his people” (verses 7/14). But upon coming down with the Holy Tablets and seeing the people worshiping the idol, Moses breaks them, grinds the calf, mixes the dust in the water, gives it to the people to drink, calls those who are in favor of Jehovah and those who come are the of the tribe of Levi.

The comments on this post were diverse: from Maslatón, who made a parallel between the Executive and Legislative Powers and stated that there was a threat here against democracy and against the constitution, to Milman, who hypothesized that the golden calf is the tax. PAIS, through Kovadloff, who interpreted the construction of the golden calf as the people’s impatience to endure the “sacrifices” necessary for the establishment of the country’s re-registration in a “healthy” reality from an economic and institutional point of view.

What Milei avoided putting in her post and her commentators, out of ignorance or convenience, also remained silent, is how this story continued. Because Moses immediately ordered those who responded to his call to slaughter those who did not, the people who betrayed him with other gods, with other beliefs. “And he said to them, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Put each of you his sword on his thigh, go back and forth from door to door throughout the camp, and kill each of you his brother and his friend and his relative. And the sons of Levi did it according to the saying of Moses; and about three thousand men fell from the people on that day” (verses 27 and 28).

(Short parenthesis: 3,000 men from about 3,300 years ago, how many would they be today? 30 million or more?)

Moses then consecrates the murderers of his brothers, friends and relatives, as it is written: “Moses said: Today you have consecrated yourselves to the Lord, for each of you has consecrated himself to his son and to his brother, so that he give blessing upon you today” (verse 29).

Small final observation: the tribe of Levi, who responded, according to the biblical text, to the leader’s call to exterminate those who did not follow his will, formed, with the kohanim or priests, a distinct and special group within the people, with special privileges . They were exempt from many civic responsibilities and were supported by the people’s offerings and tithes. It is what Javier Milei called, before becoming president, “the caste.”
