Mild air and Saharan dust await us in the coming days

The mild weather in Austria continues, with temperatures above the long-term average at the end of the month. According to the experts at the Austrian Severe Weather Center (www.uwz.at), more Saharan dust is reaching the Alpine region in the second half of the week.

February 2024 will end as it began: warmer than average. “In the lowlands, this February was consistently too mild from the first to the last day,” analyzes Nikolas Zimmermann, meteorologist at the Austrian Severe Weather Center (www.uwz.at). “The third month of winter was completely canceled this year; February was even significantly warmer in the lowlands than an average March.”

In the coming days, temperatures will be on the verge of a low that will move from the Atlantic to the western Mediterranean, particularly on the north side of the Alps and in the east, around 6 degrees above the seasonal average. In the second half of the week, larger amounts of Saharan dust also reach Central Europe.

Slightly blow-dry at the beginning of the week

Monday will be predominantly sunny and dry in the north and east, but clouds will dominate from Vorarlberg to Upper Carinthia and a few flakes will fall from time to time on the main Alpine ridge or drops below 1200 m. In the east there will be a brisk to strong southeasterly wind, while in the mountains it will remain slightly foehn. Temperatures reach 6 to 15 degrees with the highest values ​​in the far east.

On Tuesday the sun shines from time to time from the Tyrolean lowlands to western Lower Austria, apart from that the clouds dominate and at times some snow falls on the main Alpine ridge and in the south or rain falls below 1200 m. A few drops will initially fall in the west and in the afternoon in the southeast. From northern Upper Styria to the Mostviertel it remains slightly foehn. The maximum values ​​are between 6 degrees in East Tyrol and 15 degrees in the east.

Clouds and Saharan dust

A low over the Mediterranean continues to bring mild air to Austria in the middle of the week, and larger amounts of Sahara dust are also reaching the Alpine region. Wednesday has a few sunny breaks in the eastern half, but mostly clouds predominate. From the Tyrolean Alpine main ridge to the Karawanken it rains lightly at times with a snow line between 1100 and 1300 m, otherwise it stays dry. From west to east the maximum values ​​are between 5 and 16 degrees.

Clouds continue to dominate on Thursday, initially there will be high fog on the north side of the Alps and in the east. In the south and east the cloudy gray is persistent, while from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria it clears up over the course of the day, but the sky is extremely hazy. A little rain or snow above 1300 m occasionally only falls in the extreme south. Temperatures reach 7 to 15 degrees.

There are few changes at the start of the new month, although the Saharan dust is expected to continue to cause hazy conditions next weekend.
