BOSTON – Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic will be charged with assault following his arrest this weekend following his wife called police to their home because he allegedly tried to strangle her.
A Boston Police Department report released Monday said Lucic, who won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011, appeared to be intoxicated when officers showed up at his North End apartment in the early hours Saturday morning. According to the document, Lucic was arrested on suspicion of assault once morest a relative, which might result in a prison sentence of two and a half years if convicted. He is expected to appear Tuesday.
Lucic’s agent did not respond to an email seeking comment over the weekend, and he did not respond to a text message sent Monday either.
The police report states that Brittany Lucic told officers that her husband had tried to strangle her. When the police arrived on the scene, she corrected the situation and said that Lucic had pulled her hair instead. She refused medical treatment.
The six-foot, three-inch, 236-pound Vancouverite hasn’t played since Oct. 21 due to injury. He has two assists in four games this season with the Bruins.
The Massachusetts team indicated on Saturday that Lucic would be away from the team for an indefinite period. Head coach Jim Montgomery and captain Brad Marchand said they would offer support to Lucic’s loved ones, but stopped short of addressing the forward’s arrest.
Lucic, who is 35 years old, has played more than 1,300 games in the NHL with the Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. He won the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011 and is back with the team following signing a one-year, $1 million contract as an unrestricted free agent last summer.
The Vancouver native hasn’t played since Oct. 21 due to injury.
