In an attempt to address numerous citizen complaints regarding noise, the Italian city of Milan is preparing to ban the sale of ice cream and late-night snacks. But this isn’t the first time the city has declared war on nighttime ice.

Announcement

The Italian city of Milan has introduced a new bill banning ice cream following midnight, in a bid to protect the “peace of mind and health” of the city’s residents.

The local government of this northern Italian city has presented a draft law. If the new law is passed, it might take effect next month and would remain in effect until November. It is expected that local vendors and grocers will not be happy with this new law, as they are used to selling ice cream late at night and consider it part of Italian culture.

The bill would ban the sale of all prepared foods, including pizza and drinks, following 12:30 a.m. on weekdays and 1:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays. This is an attempt to reduce the presence of groups of people who make noise on city streets and disturb local residents who want to sleep.

The ban is expected to apply to 12 districts of Milan, including the famous nightlife districts of Arco della Pace and Navelle.

Last month, Mayor Giuseppe Sala said that “a large part of the population complains regarding excessive noise.”

“In turn, I must listen to all citizens, including those who have to work and those who have business interests,” Sala added.

Marco Granelli, deputy mayor in charge of security, wrote on his Facebook account: “We seek a balance between socialization and entertainment, peace and health for the population and free economic activity for traders and businessmen. ‘business. »

This isn’t the first time the Italian city has tried to ban late-night ice cream.

In 2013, Milan’s city council – then led by Giuliano Pisapia – failed to get ice cream lovers and late-nighters off the streets. But the measures proposed at the time provoked a broad and decisive reaction at the popular level.

As for the new proposal, citizens now have until the beginning of May to appeal and propose changes to the bill.
