A party for the whole city, even for the more peripheral neighborhoods undergoing redevelopment. Design Week 2024 – scheduled from 15 to 21 April in conjunction with the Salone del Mobile in Milan – will be an opportunity to reiterate not only the centrality of Milan in the world of design, but also its international attractiveness, thanks to a cultural and creative offering that has very few equals in the world.
This year, there will be 1,326 scheduled appointments, 10.5% more than last year, carried out through 182 projects (+3.4%) which were selected through the usual call by the Municipality of Milan, which brings together initiatives of public interest dedicated to design, making the spaces available to welcome them. Among these there are also some events that are part of the Fuorisalone schedule, which however also includes many initiatives by private individuals, within showrooms, companies, buildings or galleries, for a total of 778 events confirmed to date.
The 182 projects selected by the Municipality
Among the project selection criteria, the participation of young designers (545 of the accepted initiatives are actually aimed at them); the use of circular and sustainable solutions in creation; the reuse or recycling of materials and fittings; inclusiveness and access to people with sensory and motor disabilities; solutions to reduce the use of private cars and vice versa encourage the use of public transport or cycling and shared mobility.
«Milan Design Week returns with a rich schedule, increasingly global and inclusive, capable of communicating with the territory. It will be a week of exhibitions and meetings for operators and professionals, but also an opportunity for everyone to discover design in its different forms – said the Councilor for Economic Development of the Municipality, Alessia Cappello –. A celebration that will not be limited to the historic areas of the Design Week, but will involve new and less central areas, with a view to valorising all the neighbourhoods”.
The 18 design districts
This year there will be 18 neighborhoods involved in the schedule. The historic design areas are confirmed: Brera (with 260 events), 5Vie, Durini, Isola, Statale, Tortona (which recorded 100 thousand visitors last year). Also confirmed are the two debuts from last year (Porta Venezia and Zona Monumentale), to which are added the Sarpi district and many areas that will host various proposals: Castello, Porta Romana, Central Station, San Vittore, Quadrilatero della Moda, Zona Bocconi, Navigli , Nolo, Crescenzago and Barona.
