AAt the beginning of September 2024, representatives of the stakeholders involved in the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic project carried out a new inspection visit to the vast construction site being carried out near Cortina d’Ampezzo, on the site of the track Eugene Monti, construction site representing a major technical and logistical challenge in order to meet particularly tight deadlines.

Also, after an incursion on site last Junethe said parties – namely representatives of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), the International Luge Federation (FIL), but also the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and of course the Organising Committee of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games – were thus able to see the progress of the work in progress. at the initiative of the company Pizzarotti and under the control of the Infrastructure Company Milano Cortina 2026 SpA (SIMICO).

As explained at the end of the visit by the Government Commissioner responsible for monitoring the construction site at SIMICO, Fabio Massimo Saldini:

The work schedule is on track, as are production and strategic objectives that will take the track to a pre-approval phase in March 2025 and to its use in preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The spring season marked by bad weather did not affect the construction which respected the main stages and continues to progress according to the deadlines..

The Commissioner also specified that the upcoming start of the winter period would have no impact on the continuation of the worksite, which currently involves 200 workers, i.e. 150 people on the construction itself and 50 on the pre-assembly of the structures.

Logistical resources have already been prepared to allow the work to proceed smoothly, through an emergency plan designed to compensate for the drop in temperatures which could affect the pipes and concrete production in particular.

Present during the visit to the site, the President of the IBSF did not hide his satisfaction with the progress of the work.

As Ivo Ferriani, who is also an IOC member, said:

Following our on-site inspection, I am very pleased to confirm that the quality of the product and the timing we see in the execution of the works make us absolutely confident about the final result.

We are sure that the track will be ready on time and in the manner planned and, above all, with the quality necessary to ensure the safety of the athletes..

Over the next few months, the workers involved will have to complete the 16 bends one by one, which make up the most technical part of a 1,650-metre track that will have in fine a height difference of 110 meters and the completion of the main structures must be carried out by March 2025.

This tight schedule is imposed as much by the prospect of the 2026 Olympic Games as by the necessary organization of test events before the Olympic event. The pre-approval of the Cortina d’Ampezzo track is thus set for next March, while the test phase is planned for October 2025.

But even if the project is now satisfactory to the stakeholders, they still intend to have a plan B in case a schedule and budget slippage becomes inevitable, knowing that the IOC has long put pressure on the organizers and the Italian authorities so that they abandon the idea ofa costly redevelopment of the historic track Eugene Monti.

In this sense, the Organising Committee should confirm the choice of an alternative track by October, a choice which will then be secured by the IOC.

At this stage, three options have been identified: St. Moritz (Switzerland), Igls/Innsbruck (Austria) and Lake Placid (USA).

In the specific case of the latter, The possibility of hosting the above-mentioned events is of historic importanceIf the Sliding Centre were to be included in the 2026 Olympic Games, it would then become the first facility of its kind to host the Games three times after the 1932 and 1980 editions.
