Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, dies

Moscow – The last president of the Soviet Union and father of ‘perestroika’, Mikhail Gorbachevpassed away today in Moscow at the age of 91.

According to the TASS agency, Gorbachev will be buried in the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow, where the remains of prominent figures in the history of this country lie, as well as the tomb of Gorbachev’s wife, Raísa.

Gorbachev had been living away from the media spotlight for years due to health problems.

The local media came to affirm that he spent months hospitalized for a host of conditions. In 2019, the last Soviet leader was hospitalized for pneumonia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed “deep sorrow” over Gorbachev’s death, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

“Putin expresses his deep sorrow for the death of Gorbachev, in the morning (Russian time) he will send a telegram of condolences to his relatives and friends”said Peskov, quoted by the Interfax agency.
