Mike Pence Announces Presidential Candidacy, Setting Up Showdown with Former Ally Trump

2023-06-05 16:05:00

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence submitted his presidential candidacy to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Thursday. It will be a confrontation with former President Trump, who was in power together. More and more candidates are entering the race for the Republican nomination.

Pence, 63, will formally announce his candidacy in Iowa on Wednesday, according to people familiar with the matter.

The race for the Republican nomination begins at the Iowa caucuses. The fact that the state’s Republicans are largely evangelical Christians and is from the same Midwest as Iowa, the former governor of Indiana, is also expected to work in Mr. Pence’s favor.

Pence has been preparing for the race for more than a year, giving speeches in states with early Republican primaries. But an average of polls compiled by Real Clear Politics, a political information website, show Pence trailing among Republican candidates at just under 4%.

Pence has called himself the only traditional conservative candidate to beat Biden in the general election. As former vice-president, he has emphasized a track record of popular policies during the Trump administration, but has also steered clear of Trump’s allegations of fraud in his election.

But it has so far failed to win over Trump’s ardent supporters and Republican voters seeking a front-runner to replace him, prompting some to question Pence’s chances of winning the nomination.
