Former US Vice President Mike Pence is running for the presidential nomination of his Republicans for the 2024 election. The former deputy to ex-President Donald Trump submitted the necessary documents for a candidacy to the US Federal Elections Commission on Monday. The 63-year-old archconservative politician is expected to officially announce his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Wednesday in the state of Iowa.

Pence has been considering a presidential bid for some time. The official declaration of candidacy, which might be viewed on Monday on the website of the Federal Electoral Commission, is a prerequisite for this.

According to US media reports, the evangelical Christian and anti-abortion opponent will release a first campaign video on Wednesday, give a speech to supporters in Iowa’s capital Des Moines and appear on the news channel CNN. Wednesday is also his 64th birthday.

Polls on the Republican field of candidates currently see the former governor of the state of Indiana in third place, a long way behind ex-President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. According to the specialist website FiveThirtyEight, Pence currently has an average of 5.4 percent in the survey. Trump comes to around 54 percent and DeSantis to around 21 percent.

Pence was a loyal deputy to Trump from 2017 to 2021 in the White House. The storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, during which rampaging Trump supporters shouted “Hang Mike Pence”, among other things, led to a break between the two Republicans.

At the time, Pence refused to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential election, as requested by Trump. He became the target of furious attacks from Trump, who had been spreading allegations of election fraud that had been refuted many times for weeks.

“His reckless words put my family and everyone in the Capitol in danger that day,” Pence said of Trump in March. “And I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

Trump announced last November that he wanted to retake the White House in the November 2024 presidential election. In the months that followed, former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, African-American Senator Tim Scott, former governor of the southern state of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson, and then, in May, Florida governor DeSantis, all joined.

According to media reports, the former governor of the state of New Jersey, Chris Christie, wants to announce his application on Tuesday. On the same day as Pence, the governor of the state of North Dakota, Doug Burgum, might then make his presidential ambitions official.

The Republican primaries begin early next year, traditionally starting in the Midwestern state of Iowa. The Republican primary winner will challenge President Biden, who is running for another four years in the White House.
