The Canadiens have had a pretty busy summer overall. Between the selection of Juraj Slafkovský in first place in the repechage, the transaction that brought Kirby Dach to Montreal on the evening of the repechage or the most recent exchange in which the CH acquired Sean Monahan, things have brewed in the metropolis in the last few months.
That said, among all that, it is possible to forget that the Habs traded Jeff Petry (and Ryan Poehling) to the Pittsburgh Penguins to acquire Mike Matheson in return. The defender is therefore returning to his hometown and will occupy a veteran role in a young Montreal defensive squad.
Kaiden Guhle, Justin Barron, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj, Mattias Norlinder: all these young people have a chance to play with CH this year, and they will have to be supported.
And if ever the young people need help, Matheson is ready to help them, but he does not want to impose himself: he wants to be available for them without being constantly in their ear, as reported by Stu Cowan in a text published earlier today.

Matheson, a 2012 first-round pick, knows what it’s like to be a promising young defenseman on the Bettman circuit. He was once a big hope for the Panthers, and despite a few slumps, he has had a very good career so far.
However, even if he is ready to help young people, he does not want to impose himself. After all, he is well aware that the young people who will be in the NHL will be there by right and despite his experience, he does not want to place himself above them.
And that seems to me to be the right attitude to have in his case. I do not believe that it is by constantly being in the ear of a young player that the latter will develop, but rather by giving him space while being available to guide him.
On another note, Matheson says he is very happy to enjoy a fresh start in his hometown. He admits that among the 32 cities of the NHL, Montreal is probably the one that allows him to make the transition the easiest and he is happy to be able to bring his family to the metropolis.
In short, we feel happy to be a member of the Habs, and obviously, he is ready to help the young defenders of the team. Can’t wait to see him at work, just like his young partners on the blue line.
