He added in a statement: “During our contacts with the American authorities last week, we took some kind of guarantee to reduce the escalation in the southern suburbs and Beirut.”
He did not provide further details about the guarantees, but said: “The Americans are serious about putting pressure on Israel to reach a ceasefire.”
Israel has not attacked the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital since late last week, after targeting it almost daily for weeks in attacks that destroyed buildings and claimed the lives of dozens.
The raids targeted a number of senior leaders of the Lebanese faction movement and its leaders in the region, including the group’s Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in a major strike on September 27.
Mikati said that international efforts are still underway to reach a ceasefire that would put an end to the hostilities between the Israeli army and the Lebanese factions.
Hostilities have been taking place along Lebanon‘s southern border with Israel since this October, in parallel with the Israeli attack on Gaza, which followed the Hamas attack on southern Israel.
Israel has sharply escalated its bombing campaign on Lebanon in the past few weeks, including Lebanese faction strongholds in southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and the eastern Bekaa. Other areas of Lebanon were also bombed, most recently in northern Lebanon.
