It might only be her. At home in the United States, Mikaela Shiffrin won the 90th event of her career in the Killington slalom this Sunday. The World Cup leader held off a sensational Petra Vlhova, second by 33 hundredths. The duo crushed the competition, since the Swiss Wendy Holdener completed the podium at 1″37. The Frenchwoman Marion Chevrier finished 23rd (+3″21).
This 90th World Cup success, Mikaela Shiffrin took it away from her mind. It was enough to hear the silence of the Vermont public following Petra Vlhova’s monstrous second round to understand that the Slovak had perhaps just killed the race. Third in the first round, 28 hundredths behind Shiffrin, Vlhova had just put 1.09 behind Holdener.
Shiffrin-Vlhova, the duel is on
Anything but disturbed by Lena Duerr’s miss just before her (the German had finished second in the first round, at 0″19), Shiffrin held up to her rival’s infernal tempo, before allowing herself to accelerate at the end to increase her lead. In an electric atmosphere, the champion appeared moved and reassured regarding her level. This was the third slalom of the season: the first was won by Vlhova (in Levi, Finland), the last two by Shiffrin (to Levi and therefore Killington) The duel has only just begun.
Another great lady of the day is Marta Rossetti. The Italian, bib 32, 13th in the first round, took 5th place in the final, for her very first top 10 in her career. Finally, the last beautiful story concerns the Frenchwoman Marion Chevrier. Bib number 59, the skier from La Plagne narrowly slipped to 30th place in the first round, to score her first career points. This final 23rd place would almost make us forget the sad result of Les Bleues: Clarisse Brèche finished 36th in the first round, Chiara Pogneaux 44th, Marie Lamure 47th and Doriane Escané 50th. Reaction expected in Courchevel on December 21.
