With Red Bull-KTM giving his seat to Jack Miller, Miguel Oliveira is planning a move to Gresini Racing. After the Barcelona qualifier there was a crucial meeting.
Jack Miller was disappointed because he might already imagine before the start of the season that Ducati would replace him with Enea Bastianini or Jorge Martin following 2022, despite two GP victories and fourth place in the 2021 World Championship in the Lenovo factory team. And Miguel Oliveira showed little sympathy for KTM’s plans to bring Miller into the Red Bull KTM Factory Team and have him return to the KTM Tech3 customer team despite four MotoGP victories in two and a half years. The Portuguese saw this intention of the Austrians as a loss of prestige and as a demonstration of distrust on the part of his employer KTM. Because Hervé Poncharal’s Tech3 team is actually considered a junior team; In 2022, the rookies Remy Gardner and Raúl Fernández will drive there.
Oliveira already expressed his displeasure with the KTM plans at Mugello last week. “Yes, KTM offered me a place at Tech3 for 2023 ahead of the Italian GP. I’ll think regarding it, but it’s not my dream place. My preferred solution is no longer available,” he said, referring to the Red Bull-KTM team, which will consist of Binder and Miller in 2023.
Many comparable team spots were no longer available as Joan Mir will join Repsol, Ducati have the top two teams occupied, Monster-Yamaha continue with Quartararo and Morbidelli and Aprilia Racing have extended the contracts of Aleix Espargaró and Viñales until the end of 2024.
Now an exchange of rings between Ducati and KTM is in the offing: Miller is returning to Red Bull KTM following eight years, Oliveira is likely to switch to Ducati and Gresini Racing following seven Red Bull-KTM years. There, the place of the three-time winner of the season, Bastianini, will be free, who will end up at “70 percent” next to Bagnaia at Ducati Lenovo.
It was heard from Italy today that Miguel and his manager father Paulo had already accepted the Ducati offer. After qualifying, the pair marched into the Gresini Racing camp, accompanied by Ciabatti, as Fausto’s widow, Nadia Padovani, has the final say in driver selection as team owner. She has to be responsible for the decision with her sponsors.
Paolo Ciabatti, accompanied by Miguel and Paulo Oliveira, confirmed the split between Ducati and Miller before going to Gresini. She no longer came as a surprise. Ciabatti: “We said to Jack and his manager Aki Ajo: If you are looking for a place on a factory team, please look around because we cannot offer Jack a place on the factory team for 2023. We knew they were negotiating with KTM.”
Ducati might have traded Johann Zarco to Gresini if Miller had agreed to the Pramac spot. After the Australian left, Ducati had to make short-notice changes.
“We have a very close relationship with the Gresini racing team,” explained Ciabatti. “Those responsible always consult with us when it comes to driver decisions. We checked which drivers with a good level are available. Because when a MotoGP team is used to winning, it’s difficult to replace that top rider with a rookie.”
If the new partnership between Oliveira, Ducati Corse and Gresini Racing is sealed, the eight places on the coveted Desmosedici machines should be sealed for 2023:
Ducati Lenovo: Bagnaia und Bastianini
Prima Pramac Ducati: Martin and Zarco.
Mooney VR46 Ducati: Marini and Bezzecchi.
Gresini Racing: Oliveira und Di Giannantonio.
Miguel Oliveira wonders why KTM chose Miller (three MotoGP wins in seven and a half years) over him on the Red Bull KTM Factory Team for 2023 despite having four MotoGP wins in three and a half years.
“The fact that he was fourth in the World Championship last year and fifth in the World Championship up to the Mugello GP speaks for Jack Miller,” said KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer.
That the negotiations for Miller were led by his manager Aki Ajo, whose team has clinched more than half of all GP victories for KTM in the Moto3 and Moto2 classes and who, following Oliveira and Binder, also has Remy Gardner and Raúl Fernández for the MotoGP World Championship built up was certainly not a competitive disadvantage.
