Migration – Melilla: the AU demands the opening of an investigation

The President of the Commission of the African Union (Au), Moussa Kaki Mahamat, demanded this Tuesday, June 28, 2022 the opening of an investigation into the tragedy which took place in the Spanish enclave of Melilla in Moroccan territory.

“I call for an immediate investigation into this case and remind all countries of their obligations under international law to treat all migrants with dignity (…)”, he wrote on his Twitter account. Mr. Faki condemned and denounced “the violent and degrading treatment of African migrants”.

On June 24, 2022, at least 23 migrants died, according to Moroccan authorities, following an attempt by nearly 2,000 migrants to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla, in Moroccan territory.
