Migrants who are in shelters in the city of Tijuana (Mexico), bordering the United States, expressed their concern about a possible victory of the Republican candidate Donald Trump, remembering the measures he promoted during his Administration (2017-2021).
The uncertainty is especially notable among those who are asylum seekers and who will soon be received in the United States, as they do not know if after the election their cases will advance or be blocked, given that many had a waiting period of up to 10 months.
Jorge, who decided to be named this way for security reasons, is originally from the Mexican state of Guerrero, where he left more than a year ago due to the violence in his place of origin.
“With everything Trump has said about migrants there is always disagreement, and if so, he might win, well I imagine that things have to be done according to the law to be well there, so that they don’t deport him.” to one,” he said in an interview with the EFE news agency. He noted that Trump “can be stricter” in immigration terms.
He recalled that his process has been difficult since he left his town in Guerrero, however, he stressed that he wanted to do things well to cross into the United States.
Get to the US no matter who wins
For his part, a migrant from Honduras, who left his country four months ago to escape crime and threats from gangs, shared with EFE that his main objective is to reach the United States and once there fight to establish himself, more regardless of whether Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris wins.
What are gangs?
It is an international terrorist organization of gangs dedicated to drug trafficking, rape, weapons smuggling, kidnapping, robbery and contract murder.
They originated in Los Angeles, California (USA) and then spread to other states and countries such as Mexico, Canada, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
Most of its members are Salvadorans, Guatemalans and Hondurans. These are distinguished by having tattoos that cover part of the body and face. Additionally, they have their own sign language.
“We always think about being there, in the United States, regardless of the elections, we think that this (the deportations) is not going to happen to us, nor that they will take us away, first of all, God, everything is going to be fine,” said the migrant. who was identified as Javier.
He added that, although they do not know who is going to win in the elections, he is concerned about the statements that Trump has made about migrants.
“It makes you worried, because we travel from our country to here and I imagine that he has to support us, that’s what I think,” he expressed.
Possibility of immigration reform
Pastor Albert Rivera Colón, director of the Ágape Misión Mundial shelter, said in an interview with EFE that if Donald Trump wins, “all the threats he has said will happen.”
He added that if his party achieved a majority in the Senate and in the Upper and Lower Houses, immigration reform could be carried out.
“Trump has seemed very harsh, he has thought about mass deportation. The problem is that in the United States there is a division of migrants, since there are some who are already 30 or 40 years old and they have been working and contributing to social security, with which the US government supports its elderly,” he noted. .
The pastor said that it is not in the United States’ interest to deport these migrants, because they are left without resources to provide for the elderly.
“In addition to that, they are going to have to make an evaluation of their economy, because that also involves the inflation in which the US economy is immersed,” he added.
In relation to Harris being elected, the pastor indicated that the situation of migrants would be the same, given the promises that she possibly “will not keep”, mainly if the majority of the Senate is Republican.
“I would have to negotiate very well with the Republicans for immigration reform and that is going to be very difficult,” he concluded.
Trump and Harris’ immigration proposals
During the election campaign, both Trump and Harris presented their proposals, among which the immigration situation in the United States stands out.
Trump promises to carry out the largest deportation in American history, where more than 11 million people live in an irregular situation.
In an interview with the magazine Timeopened the door to building detention camps for migrants and deploying the Army to persecute people without documents.
For her part, Harris has criticized these Republican proposals, pointing out that they represent a “retrograde” idea about what the United States is.
However, the Administration of Joe Biden, of which Harris is vice president, has carried out more than a million deportations and it is expected that by the end of his term the number of expulsions seen under the Trump administration will be exceeded (1 .5 million).
On the other hand, Trump claims to sign an executive order so that the children of undocumented migrants, born in the United States, do not obtain citizenship, even though it is a right enshrined in the Constitution.
While Harris in her presidential campaign has indicated that the immigration system is “broken” and that a “comprehensive reform” is needed to include a path “to citizenship,” but she no longer promises the 2020 reform.
Trump also promised to end Humanitarian Parole and opposes Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which he already tried to revoke during his term.
These are other proposals from Trump and Harris:
Donald Trump:
-Resume construction of the border wall with Mexico
-Recover the Title 42
Kamala Harris
-Inscribe the restrictions that prohibit the majority of those who cross irregularly from requesting asylum in the United States

Executive order to end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants, a move that has faced significant legal and constitutional challenges.
Both candidates have put forth starkly different views on immigration, reflecting broader ideological divides within American politics. Harris argues for a more humanitarian approach, focusing on pathways to citizenship and protection for vulnerable populations, while Trump advocates for stricter enforcement and a hardline stance against illegal immigration.
As the election approaches, the immigration debate continues to be a critical issue for many voters, particularly those in immigrant communities who are directly affected by these policies. The outcomes of these elections could significantly shape the future of immigration reform and the lives of millions in the U.S. and beyond.
Voters are encouraged to consider how each candidate’s policies align with their values and the realities of their communities. With immigration being such a pivotal topic, the choices made in the upcoming election may resonate for years to come.
