2023-12-16 18:15:11

One migrant without proper documents on Saturday, December 16, was able to overcome the fences at the Vaalimaa border checkpoint. This was reported by Yle with reference to the STT news agency.

The information that one migrant overcame the border fence was confirmed by the head of the border service of South-Eastern Finland, Kimmo Gromoff. He said that following the incident the border fence was strengthened.

Now the situation at the checkpoint is calm, the head of the service added. The further fate of the migrant is not specified.

Yle reported that the night on the Finnish border passed peacefully, with migrants lighting fires.

As Fontanka previously wrote, dozens of cars remained at the Finnish border when it closed on the evening of Friday, December 15. Those who were unlucky had to turn around.

Over the next month, those wishing to travel to Russia from Finland or back will have to look for other routes. One option is ferries between Tallinn and Helsinki. Estonia did not close the border, despite warnings regarding this possibility.
