[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] Migraine is not a cure-all, but a disease that requires constant management, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Recently, as the causes and pathogenesis of migraine are known, various treatments such as medication, Botox injection, laryngeal nerve block, and anti-CGRP injection are being performed. Along with such treatment, migraine should also be managed through lifestyle correction.

First, proper exercise is essential for migraine control. However, high-intensity exercise or weight training can cause headaches, so it’s good to start with brisk walking. It is important to walk for more than 40 minutes while walking enough to make you sweat a little. As for walking exercise, if a headache is caused by sunlight, it is recommended to wear sunglasses and a sun cap or walk following the sun goes down. Weather that is too hot or humid can also trigger or exacerbate migraine headaches, so adjust your exercise schedule accordingly.

Second, obesity is a representative factor that can exacerbate migraine headaches, and if you are obese, you should maintain an appropriate weight through weight loss. However, excessive starvation or dieting can also cause migraines, so you need to be careful.

Third, regular sleep habits are also one of the first steps in managing migraines. Sleeping too much or too little and taking long naps can also trigger migraine headaches. Therefore, it is important to keep a set wake-up time even on holidays.

Fourth, caffeine should be reduced or cut off. Headaches can also occur if you consume too much caffeine or stop drinking it altogether. If you want to reduce or quit caffeine, it is desirable to limit your daily intake by consuming only one cup of coffee in the morning and changing it to decaffeinated followingwards.

Fifth, drinking is a typical aggravating factor of migraine, and should be enjoyed by replacing it with non-alcoholic beer, carbonated water, or grape juice.

Finally, a daily rule to follow for migraine treatment and management is to keep a headache diary. A headache diary is a great help in diagnosis and determining the most beneficial treatment during treatment, and it is very helpful in preventing headaches by discovering factors that aggravate or improve their headaches.

Shinchon Yonsei Hospital Neurology Department Director Kim Da-eun said, “Migraine is a disease that requires constant attention and management. “Above all, if you are suffering from migraines, I hope you can start appropriate treatment through consultation with a medical staff as soon as possible,” he advised.
