Middle East: Tokyo and Ankara call on their citizens to leave Lebanon 2024-08-09 01:58:05

Turkey has also called on its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country if there is no need to stay there because there is a risk that the situation will deteriorate rapidly, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced late yesterday, Sunday.

Tensions have risen since Ismail Haniya, the leader of the Palestinian group Hamas, was killed in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after Israel killed Fouad Shukr, a top military commander of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, in a strike in Beirut.

Turks who are in Lebanon should be careful and should not go to Nabatiya, South Lebanon, Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel regions unless there is an essential need, the ministry said in the statement it issued.

“Those who do not need to stay in Lebanon should leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still operating, if possible,” the statement added, adding that Turks should avoid traveling to Lebanon unless it is necessary.

Earlier yesterday, Sunday, France and Italy had called on their citizens in Lebanon to leave the country due to the risk of military escalation in the Middle East.
