Middle East: Hamas was planning a base in Turkey – Why? – 2024-07-26 21:07:56

Hamas aimed to establish a base in Turkey and plan attacks against Israeli targets abroad from there, according to documents seized by Israeli forces from the home of a senior Hamas official in Gaza and published in The Times. of London.

According to the documents, which were titled “Establishment of a base in Turkey”, the attacks that – in theory – would be planned from Turkish territory (the point is not specified), would target neighboring countries, including NATO member states. The documents were found at the home of Hamza Abu-Shanab, chief of staff to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

“We propose to establish a security arm abroad from which we will be able to conduct operations in the future,” the documents state, adding that “there is no other option but to go to great lengths to establish military enclaves, the which will form the basis for special operations that can strengthen the resistance forces militarily, diplomatically and morally – for this we propose the creation of a security branch abroad, which will be able to carry out espionage and military operations.”

The documents state that “assassinations of Israeli officials, including Mossad officers and commanders, as well as sabotage of Israeli ships” will be planned from the base, and a “kidnapping” operation is also mentioned. Also, they include a three-year plan to establish bases in other countries according to the model of the base in Turkey and mention the sources of funding. They also include a list of the organization’s operatives who are planned to be based there, while it is not yet clear whether the plan was formulated before the October 7 attack or after it.

On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Benjamin Netanyahu “has reached a level that would make Hitler jealous of his genocidal methods.” Erdogan reiterated his position that Hamas is not a terrorist organization but a “resistance movement,” and noted that more than 1,000 members of the group are being treated in hospitals across Turkey.
