Microsoft: towards a new mixed reality headset? – I have a friend in communications

It seems that a mixed reality headset is in the works at Microsoft. And not just any headset! This one is supposed to compete with the Apple Vision Pro.

An accessible mixed reality headset?

After Meta and Apple, it is Microsoft’s turn to be in the spotlight again. Indeed, the American multinational IT and microcomputer company is reportedly preparing a mixed reality headset that could compete with the Apple Vision Pro. – As a reminder, mixed reality is a mix between virtual reality and augmented reality. The term covers devices that allow you to view content in 3D, such as the headsets in question here. – It seems that Samsung Display, a Korean screen production company, is currently supplying several thousand micro-Oled panels to Microsoft.

This is surprising news when you consider that Microsoft, a pioneer in this field with its HoloLens headset, had indicated that it no longer wanted to invest in this type of technology. The company had notably announced that it would withdraw its Windows Mixed Reality platform at the end of 2023, as it had been a major failure.

A strong competitor for the Apple Vision Pro?

L’Bill Gates’ company is certainly preparing a new mixed reality headset. But how could this worry Apple with its Vision Pro?

We must first take into account the fact that the Apple Vision Pro was a real commercial failure. Indeed, sold from €3,999, the latter is made from premium materials. Result? It is inaccessible for many households, including for many who could have been interested in the product… Apple is therefore losing many potential buyers. For its part, the Meta Quest 3 was already presented as a more affordable alternative to the Apple Vision Pro, displaying a price of less than €1,000.

With its new mixed reality headset, Microsoft aims to fit between these two budgets. It would be a question of presenting a headset dedicated to entertainment, focused on video games and films, approaching what can be presented by the Apple Vision Pro in this area, but at a much more accessible price. Buyers previously deprived of this purchase due to lack of means might finally have the means to afford the headset of their dreams!

For those interested, note that these are only rumors for the moment and that such a helmet should not be released for at least two years. So be patient…!
