Flights have been canceled due to a major computer glitch while television broadcasts had to be moved online.
Computers using Microsoft Windows started showing ‘Blue Screen of Death’ error which made them unusable. Why this happened is not clear.
Many of the world’s biggest companies, including airlines, TV stations and banks, faced difficulties due to this situation.
According to cyber security companies, there are problems all over the world. The issue appears to be related to a broken cybersecurity update that prevented computers from working.
Sky News has gone offline. Airports were unable to check flights. The railway system has been disrupted and banks have warned that customers may not be able to make payments.
Tracking website Down Detector has recorded outages and other problems at major companies such as Delta Airlines, Visa, MasterCard, Lloyds Bank, Santander, Amazon, Ryanair, Sky News, Ladbrokes, BT and Microsoft Teams.
It is not clear whether all of these are related to the problem with the computers.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Delta, United and American Airlines planes were grounded in the US, while flights and train operators around the world faced difficulties.
Britain’s busiest rail company Govia Thameslink, whose Southern, Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Great Northern services operate on various links from London, says it is experiencing ‘massive IT issues’.
“These are global third-party IT issues,” Ryanair said. The company has instructed passengers to arrive at the airport ‘at least three hours before’ their flight.
Even the London Stock Exchange suffered a halt and the stock markets fell due to the closure.
The FTSE 100 fell 0.8 percent, with investors apparently worried regarding possible financial implications if the shutdown continues for a prolonged period.
“We are currently experiencing massive IT issues across our network,” he said.
This means that trains can be canceled at short notice while passengers will have difficulty accessing information immediately.
Viewers on Sky News were shown an error message indicating that it had stopped broadcasting.
“We apologize for the disruption in the broadcast,” the statement said. We hope Sky News broadcasts will be restored soon.’
The issue appears to be related to a bug in cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which may have released an update regarding the issue.
The company said in the morning that the problem has been identified. The company has withdrawn the update, but the computers that were affected don’t seem to have been fixed.
Representatives from the cyber security company said on a Reddit thread that restarting the computer following deleting the update might resolve the issue.

This requires that administrators have access to the computer, however computers that are in remote use may not be fine.
CrowdStrike X (formerly Twitter) said on X that it had found a solution to the problem. The company specifically said it was not the result of a cyber attack.
The company’s president and chief executive, George Kurtz, wrote that ‘CrowdStrike is actively working with customers affected by a flaw found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Computers using Mac and Linux are not affected.’
He said that this is not a security incident or a cyber attack. This issue has been identified. It has been isolated and resolved.’
