Microsoft announced ago a few months the implementation of DirectStorage on Windows. This is the new API used by the latest Xbox for faster loading of games. Now Microsoft releases the first DirectStorage SDK so that developers can use this functionality in their Windows games.
DirectStorage is now available to implement in games for Windows
Microsoft today releases the first stable version of the SDK from DirectStorage. This will allow developers this new API in their games. Thanks to this, the games will be able to process their data from the SSD to the GPU without the need for the intervention of the processor. This system is already used by the Xbox Series X | S to achieve shorter loading times.
They have also clarified that this functionality will not only be present in Windows 11, but will also be available in Windows 10. Although they always claim that Windows 11 is the recommended operating system for gaming.
Unfortunately there are no games available for Windows that currently make use of this feature. After the release of the first SDK, it will take some time for developers to implement the new API in their games. Although there will always be games that, for different reasons, choose not to use this new feature.
