At an international peace forum held in Paris, Microsoft Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith was asked about the US tech giant’s role in promoting peace.
He said that Microsoft and its competitors are fighting disinformation primarily through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Mr. Smith said Microsoft and other companies are doing this “by developing technological tools to facilitate the detection of counterfeit, modified, altered content,” according to remarks translated into French by France Inter radio.
“We’re starting to recognize the Russian campaign very well, for example when they tried to convince people not to get the Covid vaccine,” he said. “Or today, when we see Russian disinformation in the Middle East.”
According to Smith, technology platforms that recognize such disinformation have three options: do nothing, delete it, or relabel it and mark the content as altered.
“There is no consensus on what companies should do,” he added.
The Paris Peace Forum comes amid rising conflicts around the world and more than a month of war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Since the October 7 attacks by Hamas in southern Israel, which Israel says killed 1,200 people and took 239 hostages, Israel has relentlessly bombarded Gaza and sent in ground forces.
The Hamas-run Palestinian Authority Health Ministry says more than 11,000 people, including many children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip.
In an interview with the BBC on the sidelines of the forum on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attacks by Hamas but called on Israel to stop bombing civilians in the Gaza Strip, saying there was no justification for it and the deaths were an outrage.
