Microsoft has begun testing tabs in File Explorer for Windows 11.
Rafael Rivera, one of the developers of the EarTrumpet app for Windows, discovered support for hidden new tabs inside the latest version of Microsoft’s Windows 11 tests.
Once enabled, tabs appear at the top of the File Explorer app, allowing users to open multiple folders in a single window.
It seems that this feature is one of the secret additions that the company started testing in Windows 11 recently.

Adding tabs to File Explorer in Windows 11 allows you to open multiple folders in a single window.
Microsoft first started testing tabs in Windows 10 apps, under a feature called Groups.
This included support for tabs within File Explorer and tabs in every Windows application. But Tabs scrapped the project and never brought it to Windows 10 users.
However, the company does not appear to be fixing the File Explorer interface as part of support for this tab. File Explorer has been in the operating system since Windows 95.
A variety of designers have created concepts to try to improve and modernize it in recent years.
Tabs made some improvements to the file explorer in Windows 11. But one developer has created a new file explorer app called Files. Available in the Windows Store, this app supports tabs and includes other modern themes and features.
Amanda Langofsky, head of Windows Insider, said last month that the company is communicating regarding the features it intentionally enables for program subscribers to try and provide feedback.
