Microsoft Teams could soon benefit from one of its most important updates since it exists. According to The Verge, Microsoft is preparing a brand new version of its collaborative application, which is more efficient and uses less memory. The development of this major overhaul of Teams is already so advanced that the new version of the application could be deployed to users next month.
A new architecture for a new life
If you use Teams on your computer, you are aware that the Microsoft application is far from neutral when it comes to exploiting the resources available. Teams is such a drain on your machine’s RAM that it is not uncommon to see the application crash, especially if you are performing other more or less intensive tasks alongside. But things could quickly change. The Verge reports that Microsoft has been working on a new Teams client for some time now, identified internally as Teams 2.0 or Teams 2.1. To create this new version, Microsoft would have started from scratch. Thus, the new Teams could consume up to 50% less memory than the current application. In addition, the app would be less greedy in processor resources and would therefore limit its impact on the autonomy of portable machines.
To create this new version of Teams, Microsoft abandoned the Electron framework and the Edge WebView 2 technology used by the current application. The American firm has also switched to the React Javascript library in order to improve the interface of its collaborative tool. This new architecture should make it easier for Microsoft for future improvements to Teams. For example, the adoption of these new technologies should allow the tool to support multiple accounts simultaneously.
Above all, this new version of Teams should correct the main negative points of the current tool, which looks more like a gas plant. With the new Teams, Microsoft could put everyone in agreement, provided that the tool is, as promised, faster and more fluid, especially when you make an online presentation or respond to your messages. While no official availability date is currently known, Microsoft could start rolling out the preview of the new Teams to users by the end of March. If Microsoft follows the same pattern that it usually uses, users will be able to choose, if they wish, to activate the new version of Teams on their machine, with the possibility of returning to the old version if necessary.
