In the past, the clock function of the work column in the Windows version was only preset to display hours and minutes, so for most people, they may not know that there are seconds. For users who want to display seconds, Windows 10 is OK. By modifying the login editing program, the clock can display the hours, minutes and seconds, but Windows 11 cannot, and there is no way to add the seconds display. Recently, Microsoft explained this matter.
Microsoft Explains Why Windows 11 Workbar Clock Can’t Display “Seconds”
According to a report by foreign media Windows Latest, when Microsoft recently responded to user questions, it made it clear that it had completely removed the “second display” function, one of the main reasons being “to avoid affecting performance.”
Most of the work column clock function in earlier versions of Windows supports the display of seconds, but it often affects the user’s computer performance. Initially, this performance will affect the 4MB system memory. Most of the computer’s memory is much higher than this number. Why? Windows 11 does not provide seconds display function?
Microsoft explained that although the computer memory is now far more than 4MB, it is still not a good idea to restore the seconds display for performance. You can imagine configuring multiple users in a system. This is not updating the work row every second. The clock is now, each user has its own working column clock, and it is updated every second, which means that one hundred stacks are transferred every second to redraw one hundred working column clocks.
This is not a good thing for the CPU, the system spends a lot of time updating the clock.
This is why the function of inserting blinking symbols is usually disabled in the terminal server. If a hundred users insert symbols with a blinking speed of 500ms, it will waste a lot of CPU resources. Even now Windows 11 will only display up to the minute, and updating one hundred clocks per minute is not a small burden on the system.
In addition to this, such short periods of “periodic activity” will also prevent the CPU from entering a low-power state, thereby affecting overall performance. Microsoft believes that the seconds function of the taskbar clock is not very important to the user interface, so it has decided to completely remove it.
Although this seems reasonable, if the second function of the clock only affects 4MB of memory in the past, even if there are 100, it will only be 400MB, and now any low-end computer has 4GB of memory. , the impact should not be very big, and the computers that will add so many users are mostly used by enterprises. It is good to disable it in some Windows 11 versions, and the home version can be retained, so I think it is a bit far-fetched. .
In any case, I have never turned on the seconds function of the Windows work column clock, so I have no feeling (laughs). There are many free clock software on the Internet that can display the seconds, and it is not difficult to solve it.
As for whether it is possible to add it back in the future, judging from Microsoft’s current answer, it should be unlikely. But this is not certain. After all, following the launch of Windows 11, many of the features of Windows 10 are missing, and some Microsoft promises to re-add them in later updated versions.
