WordPad will no longer be included in the next Windows operating system update. Windows’ built-in word processor had been part of Windows since 1995.
In Microsoft’s new list of deprecated features in Windows, namely elements that Microsoft wishes to remove in the long term from its operating system, we observe that the software publisher wants to put an end to WordPad. The latter will no longer receive updates and will be completely removed from a future Windows update.
For rich text documents, ie documents with layout and other features in addition to plain text such as .doc and .rtf files, Microsoft is strongly directing its users to its Word word processor. For plain text (usually files with .txt extension), Notepad will remain in Windows.
WordPad was added to the famous Windows 95 28 years ago, but the roots of this element of Windows go back to the very first version of the operating system in 1985. During this first decade, the integrated word processor still called Microsoft Write.
WordPad already had more advanced features: it allowed users to lay out and print text, with different fonts and bold, italic, colored and centered text. But it lacked deeper features that were becoming common in Word, such as a spell checker, thesaurus, pagination control, footnotes, and endnotes.
