Microsoft announces new policy for optional Windows updates

Microsoft has announced a new policy for rolling out optional Windows updates. The company also announced which versions of Windows 10 will stop receiving optional Windows updates starting next month.

The Redmond tech giant currently offers security updates, known as “Patch Tuesday”, on the second Tuesday of every month. These security updates will continue to arrive on the second Tuesday of each month, but optional Windows updates will arrive on the fourth week of each month, starting in April.

For the past two months, Microsoft has been pushing optional updates into the third or fourth week. But starting next month, the software giant won’t hesitate between the third and fourth week of each month to release optional updates. These updates will arrive on time, the fourth week of each month.

For those unaware, optional updates include fixes coming in the next monthly security update release and new features, albeit infrequently. Now, these updates will arrive a few weeks before Microsoft releases security updates.

Microsoft also announced that Windows 2 versions 10H20 and 2H21 will no longer receive these non-security preview updates. However, these versions will continue to receive monthly security updates going forward. Meanwhile, Windows 10 version 22H2 will be the only candidate to continue to receive optional updates on the fourth week of every month.

Microsoft will release security updates on the second Tuesday of April, while the optional update will arrive on the fourth week of April.
