In July 2020, Microsoft discontinued the Xbox One X and Xbox One S Digital Edition by that point, and now it appears that the company has quietly stopped manufacturing the Xbox One S by the end of that year as well, Cindy Walker, chief Xbox product marketing manager, told the website. The Verge: “To focus on Xbox Series X production, we are halting production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020.”
Xbox president Phil Spencer told the New York Times this week that Microsoft has sold more Series X and Series S at this point in their lifecycle than any previous Xbox generation, though he didn’t reveal actual sales figures.
That would put Series X/S shipments at more than 12 million units, analyst Daniel Ahmed of Niko Partners said.
As such, Sony told Bloomberg on Wednesday that it will continue making PS4 (which uses less advanced components than PS5) in 2022, despite planning to discontinue the console last year. The company is said to be making around 1 million PS4 units this year.
Sony has previously suggested that it will support PS4 until 2024, and several first-party exclusives will be available on both current and previous consoles this year, including Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarök.
