Microsoft announces that it is reducing the Cloud storage space of its Microsoft 365 for education offer from February 1, 2024 for… ecological reasons.

With its Microsoft 365 offer, Microsoft offers free online storage space – Cloud.

However, the Redmond firm announces that it will reduce this capacity for… environmental reasons:

With the move to the cloud, stored files, data, and unused accounts have increased significantly over time as more and more stored files and data have proliferated[..]
This situation is not viable from a cost or environmental sustainability perspective, and it puts educational institutions and their students at risk of a data breach

So from February 1, 2024, users of the free Office 365 A1 offer will see their Cloud capacity limited to 100 GB out of the 100 TB of total storage per school structure.

The Office 365 A1 offer offering limited and free access to Office applications and services to the educational sector will be completely discontinued at the beginning of August.

On August 1st, Microsoft/Office 365 Education plans will be limited:

all school tenants will receive 100 TB of free pooled storage across OneDrive, SharePoint and Exchange, with an additional 50 GB or 100 GB of pooled storage per paid user for A3 and A5 subscriptions, respectively.
