Microbiology is the science that studies microorganisms, living beings that can only be seen with a microscope. They are present in all environments on the planet and have a great impact.

Microorganisms can be found in bacteria, viruses, prions and in all ecosystems on the planet, from the arctic, glaciers, the tropics, deserts, lakes, seas, volcanoes, among others.

In this regard, the Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez Ramírez, explained that these microorganisms “are of great interest since they are responsible for a large number of diseases that affect both humans and plants and animals.” .

Furthermore, he indicated that these “also involve different studies in molecular biology and immunology, which leads to relevance in the Industrial, Agri-Food and Pharmaceutical sectors,” he points out in the publication.

The minister highlighted that in Venezuela there are extensive capacities dedicated to microbiology and especially from the “One Health” approach, which seeks to integrate the health of people, animals and the environment.

One of the spaces dedicated to this science is the Center for Microbiology and Cellular Biology of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC), which develops various projects that contribute to improving the quality of life of living beings.

Among the research promoted by this research center are: Study of virological and immunological markers of rotavirus infection; Identification of biological markers associated with susceptibility to viral infections and Identification of mutations related to genetic diseases in subjects from the Venezuelan population.
