Microbiology is making inroads into forests too – it could be the key to a greener future | Business

However, according to the scientist, this does not mean that Lithuanian forests do not experience challenges – forest ecosystems are increasingly threatened by climate change and the extreme events caused by it.

Forest restoration: challenges and innovations

Droughts, rains, storms – all this affects the forest ecosystem and poses challenges for its restoration. Dr. Aleinikov points out that due to the effects of climate change, the vitality of some types of trees may decrease, which may negatively affect the sustainability of the forest ecosystem. Especially vulnerable are young trees, for which humidity and temperature fluctuations can be fatal.

In this situation, innovative solutions become more and more important. One such innovation is the development of microbiological products by the biotechnology company Nando, which can also be used for the maintenance of forest seedlings.

Microbiology – a gentle touch to the forest ecosystem

The forest is a complex and delicate ecosystem, so any intervention in it must be considered and measured. This is where microbiological products can come in handy, which, unlike only chemical fertilizers, work in harmony with nature.

Nando’s microbiological product Bio NPK Powder S is one such example. This product provides plants with essential nutrients, increases their resistance to adverse environmental factors, and promotes growth and development.

Spruce trees are one of the main trees of Lithuanian forests, playing an important role in the ecosystem, but they are also sensitive to the effects of climate change, so the care of their seedlings requires special attention.

“Nando”, in cooperation with the Lithuanian Center for Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, carried out the first sprayings with a drone, during which spruce seedlings were sprayed with the “Bio NPK Powder S” product.

“In order to promote better rooting and growth, the roots of the seedlings will be soaked with the same product again during baking. And although the final results will become clear only after a year, in my opinion, the use of such microbiological, environmentally friendly products in forest tree nurseries is particularly relevant in improving the development of the root system of seedlings, protecting them from drying out and improving quality indicators. This is especially relevant for spruce seedlings, which need better care,” said Dr. M. Aleinikov.

The scientist claims that the use of such microbiological products in forestry is still in the initial stage, but their potential is high. He believes that these products can help improve the quality of seedlings, increase their resilience and contribute to successful reforestation.
