Micro hair pigmentation is considered an effective and painless alternative to hair transplantation. But not only hair loss, also scarring should be able to be concealed. How exactly the treatment works and how much it costs – STYLEBOOK asked a dermatologist.
Hair loss does not only affect men, it is well known that women can also lose excess hair. Possible causes include hormonal changes (e.g. during menopause or during pregnancy), malnutrition, illnesses or the use of certain medications. The so-called micro hair pigmentation should be able to help here.
What does micro hair pigmentation mean?
Micropigmentation is a hair thickening treatment. In order to visually unify the overall appearance of the hair, color pigments are introduced into the skin at bald spots. The method is comparable to permanent make-up or a tattoo. Scarring on the scalp can be treated in the same way.

Course of the treatment (for hair loss)
“Before the treatment, a natural-looking hairline is determined,” says Dr. medical Suzanne Steinkraus. These will be marked under sterile precautions. In the next step, color pigments would be inserted into the scalp with a special device on the shaved and cleaned scalp. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, several sessions spaced regarding a week apart may be necessary. These last between one and four hours.
Who is micro hair pigmentation suitable for?
Micro hair pigmentation is suitable for anyone suffering from hair loss who is looking for a non-surgical alternative to their own hair transplantation. dr Steinkraus also recommends it to women who suffer from a receding hairline or scarring on the scalp.

benefits and risks
The biggest advantage of micro hair pigmentation is the result. This is a “particularly low-maintenance and long-lasting optical hair thickening,” assures the expert. In addition, the treatment is largely painless, because micro-hair pigmentation only takes place on the top layer of skin. The procedure leaves no scars or bloody spots.
However, in rare cases, micropigmentation can cause local reactions. It is therefore important that the pigments used are hypoallergenic, says Steinkraus. It can also be disadvantageous that the tattoos have to be adapted to a specific target length of your own hair. “If the hair grows beyond that or if you cut the hair shorter, the result sometimes looks unnatural,” says the doctor.
How long does the result last and what are the costs?
As a rule, the color on the scalp fades following around two to four years. And that is what the expert explains, “because the color of the hair changes with age”. Then the pigments of the hair color are adjusted once more to obtain a natural and long-lasting result.
Initially, the treatment costs between 500 and 5000 euros, depending on the area and location of the treatment.
