Mick Schumacher in Monza: Penal transfer again! / Formula 1

The first training session in Monza takes place without Germans: de Vries sits in the Aston Martin for Vettel, and Giovinazzi drives for Schumacher for Haas. Mick needs a sense of accomplishment, but that’s going to be difficult.

Status following 15 World Championship races in 2022 from the point of view of Mick Schumacher: Only two points races, 8th place in England, 6th place in Austria, 15th place in the World Championship. Haas stable mate Kevin Magnussen has also not been in the top ten for four races, but was able to score five times, it is 22:12 for the Dane.

Mick Schumacher urgently needs a sense of achievement, but the work at Haas must also be right. In Zandvoort there was a defect in the front car jack, so the chance of points was gone.

Before the first practice session at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, one thing is certain: scoring points will also be a very difficult task in Italy. Because his Haas racing car needs a new transmission. The penalty might fall twice on his head – five ranks for a new gearbox, five ranks for new internals in the transmission.

Mick had already had to cope with a disciplinary transfer in Belgium, back then because of the installation of a new engine.

The young Schumacher doesn’t have high hopes in Monza anyway: “There are tracks on which our car doesn’t work so well.”

Put simply, on tracks where a race car is trimmed for low downforce, the Haas car is less aerodynamically efficient than on racetracks where the wings are set steeper.

Mick deepened: “We have built a car that should be good on most tracks, and on most tracks they drive with more downforce. Then you just have to bite the bullet on circuits like Monza or Spa-Francorchamps. We know what potential lies dormant in the car. There are also railways where we will be strong, such as Singapore or Suzuka. Unfortunately, Monza is a little more difficult. You also need a very streamlined car, and we don’t have that.”

Still no 2023 contract for Mick Schumacher, but the 2020 Formula 2 champion remains calm. He doesn’t think he has to hand in his calling card at every race: “I’ve shown what I can do. What happens next is up to others.”
