A man from western Michigan, identified as Christopher Alan Toppenberg, was sentenced Monday to one year in prison. and three years of probation for a shooting he was involved in that left two people dead.
Toppenberg was sentenced following pleading guilty to a January shooting that killed two men during a New Years party.
Specifically, Toppenberg pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol causing death.
Initially, Toppenberg was expected to be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
According to the Associated Press news agency, Toppenberg reached an agreement with the prosecution to plead guilty. For assuming the discharge of the firearm, prosecutors dropped two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of use of a firearm during the execution of a crime.
According to news reports reviewed by the Associated Press, Toppenberg was given a credit for the 167 days he had already served in prison.
Police reports indicated that Toppenberg was with a group of people celebrating the New Year in a wooded area of Lawrence Township, Van Buren County, shortly following midnight on January 1, when he pulled out an AR-15 rifle and fired 20 to 25 rounds horizontally in the direction of two men who were setting off fireworks regarding 100 feet away.
The victims were identified as Jason McCreary, 40, of Sutter Creek, California; and David Reed, 35, of Waverly Township.
McCreary, on the one hand, died at the scene of the shooting following receiving a direct shot to the head, while Reed, 35, died at a hospital where he was transferred following the incident following receiving multiple shots in the back.
