Two weeks ago, Michelle Obama said she was terrified by the prospect of a second term for Donald Trump.
Since this statement made as part of a CNN podcast, conservative media have taken turns to fuel the rumor of a candidacy by the former First Lady.
A persistent rumor
Among the voices fueling the rumor, while fueling distrust with regard to a dirty trick by the Obama team, the columnist of the New York Post Cindy Adams is the one who provokes the most reactions.
Like many other observers, Adams points to the starving support of the current president and highlights the fact that he might not sustain the pace of an electoral campaign.
Incapable of debating, according to her, Biden would have exhausted Barack Obama’s patience. She also believes that Michelle is just bait and that it is the 44th president who is pulling the strings.
To the impatience of the Obama couple, she adds, without proof, that Michelle Obama would have met with executives of large companies from the summer of 2022 following having made her decision.
Should we take Adams seriously? Let it first suffice to remember that she is considered the “Gossip Queen” of New York, the champion of gossip.
Moreover, this is not the first time that Michelle Obama has admitted her dislike for Trump and her fears for American democracy.
Michelle Obama and the political circus
Michelle Obama enjoys great notoriety, an essential factor if she were to join the campaign so late. Already popular with Democrats, it would benefit from the support of 56% of the entire electorate.
As she is not officially a candidate, this data is unreliable. Remember, Hillary Clinton was immensely popular following her time as Secretary of State, but that didn’t stop her from suffering a humiliating defeat in 2016.
That Barack Obama is disappointed with Joe Biden should not be surprising. He had advised him not to be a candidate in 2020 and the relationship between the two men was never as warm as was suggested. Is this enough to put him out of business ten months before the election?
Less polarizing than Hillary, Michelle Obama does not seem to have the same thirst for power. We can safely say that she is currently living the best years of her life.
I believe she would do better than Joe Biden and would have a very good chance of winning. I also believe that Kamala Harris’s clan would give her free rein, but she still has to want it.
She was already not excited regarding the idea of her husband becoming president in 2008 and I would be very surprised if she was motivated by the prospect of returning to Washington when the political climate there has rarely been so unhealthy.
The Obamas have become wealthy influencers and, even if they are given the aura once reserved for the Kennedys, they will get involved in the election campaign, but will not return to the White House.
