The Défi party presented this Tuesday the first three candidates on its federal list in the constituency of Brussels-Capital and the surrounding municipalities in view of the legislative elections of June 2024. To complete the trio, alongside the two federal deputies outgoing members of the party, the president of Défi François De Smet and the deputy Sophie Rohonyi, it is the investigating judge Michel Claise, recently retired, who is launching into politics.
If the ranks of political parties include many jurists, lawyers in particular, it is much rarer to find magistrates who have had a career as prominent as that of Michel Claise.
At 68, Michel Claise has just turned the page on a legal career where he investigated numerous financial cases, his specialty. Insider trading at Fortis, Kazakhgate, Footgate and, more recently, Qatargate from which he had to leave due to a conflict of interest are all files for which he has been responsible.
“If Michel Claise becomes a deputy, no Minister of Justice will sleep peacefully. And we will send a fantastic message to criminals“, declared the president of Défi, François De Smet, while presenting the new candidate for the elections.
In the last legislative elections of 2019, the Défi list won two seats in the Chamber in the Brussels-Capital constituency. Third on the list next June, Michel Claise will occupy a fighting position. “Third place is a combat place but it is playable. The next legislature must be sovereign with more resources for justice and the police“, estimates the president of Défi, François De Smet.
Michel Claise had already been a member of Défi for several years. “It is with him that we have developed the justice-police program in recent months“, specifies François De Smet.
For his part, Michel Claise explains that he joined Défi “because there are no baronies in this party and there is a real spirit of openness“. “I am also attached to secularism and Défi is the only truly secular party in Belgium“, adds the former investigating judge.
