At a matinee organized by the Friends of the Burgtheater on Sunday, Michael Maertens accepted the Elisabeth Orth Prize, which was awarded for only the second time. The 59-year-old was honored for his interpretation of the aging successful man Friedrich Hofreiter in Schnitzler’s “The Wide Land”. The eulogy for Maertens was given by fellow castle ensemble member Maria Happel.

“I love you! There is no one I would rather sit on a stage with than you!” Maerten’s German compatriot spread roses to her colleague, according to a broadcast from the Burgtheater. Maertens, who embodied Everyman for the first time at the Salzburg Festival this year, succeeds Birgit Minichmayr as Orth Prize winner, who accepted the honor, which was awarded for the first time last year.
