Troye Sivan: Michael Jackson as a great role model

Troye Sivan says Michael Jackson was a big inspiration for his music career.

The ‘Angel Baby’ hitmaker was influenced by the stage presence of the King of Pop, who died in 2009 at the age of 50 to pursue his dream career following seeing old footage of the ‘Bad’ superstar.

Speaking to his ‘The Idol’ co-star Rachel Sennott for ‘Interview Magazine’, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter said: “It was 100 percent Michael Jackson. When I was growing up in the mid 90’s my parents had VHS concert tapes and my father had these of Michael Jackson. And of course I loved music since the day I was born. But then it clicked that you might do it for so many people. I remember seeing this clip of him staring into the distance for three minutes and the audience getting louder and louder and then he just moved his head to the other side – I went ballistic. That’s when I was like, ‘Damn, I want to do this.'”

So Troye discovered his love for singing quite early. But the rest of the job only gradually became a passion for him. “When it came to songwriting, it only clicked for me later in life because I’ve always loved to sing, but I only sang covers.” He then got into songwriting through another artist. Troye later became a huge fan of Amy Winehouse – who died of an alcohol overdose aged 27 – and her 2006 album ‘Back to Black’, leading him to pick up a pen and start writing his own songs write.
