Participating in a World Poker Tour Main Event is an aspiration that resonates deeply within every poker enthusiast’s bucket list. Winning a coveted $6,500 all-expense-paid package from a ClubWPT freeroll? That’s not just a goal; it’s a dream come true. For Michael Goldsworthy, hailing from Anderson, Indiana, this dream was realized once again — marking his second triumph in this competitive arena.
Goldsworthy, who works as a car salesman by day, has proudly arrived at the WPT bestbet Scramble Championship, participating in Day 1B after clinching victory in an intense 776-player winner-takes-all ClubWPT online freeroll, securing his spot in Jacksonville. The 46-year-old player not only earned a $5,000 entry to the WPT bestbet Scramble Championship, but also received $1,500 to cover travel expenses, a week-long hotel accommodation, and exclusive VIP experiences during his time in Jacksonville.
During a mid-event break, PokerOrg seized the opportunity to engage with this devoted ClubWPT Diamond member, diving into his experiences and his path leading to this significant moment in his poker journey.
Tell us a little bit about your poker background:
I’ve been immersed in the game for years, but my real journey with the ClubWPT Stream Team began during the COVID pandemic.
I’ve dedicated time to playing on ClubWPT around three times a week, although my opportunities to engage in live poker are limited. When I do play live, it’s usually at the Horseshoe Casino in Indianapolis or, preferably, at Caesars in Southern Indiana.
Tournament play is where my passion lies. Throughout the last decade, I’ve participated in four WPT events and roughly six or seven at the WSOP. Most of my WPT experiences have taken place in Las Vegas, yet I’ve also competed at the renowned Seminole Hard Rock.
Is this the first time you won a ClubWPT freeroll?
No, this is the second significant package I’ve secured through ClubWPT. The first was during the $200,000 ClubWPT TV Challenge, where I was selected as one of six qualifiers. I bagged $10,000 alongside a $3,000 travel package to play live in Las Vegas for a $50,000 prize. The excitement of playing on television was thrilling.
Regrettably, due to the pandemic-related challenges in 2021, WPT had to postpone the live event in Vegas. Fortunately, they ensured that we were taken care of by sending exceptional equipment to create an impressive production from our homes. It evolved into an exciting two-hour series that provided a phenomenal experience—truly a moment I’ll cherish.
Doing this again feels equally extraordinary. The first time I won a package, my wife and I were acutely aware of what we were competing for; she even recorded my gameplay. That clip was later featured by WPT in their production, making it all the more memorable.
Did you cruise to victory in the freeroll?
Not at all; it was quite a nail-biter. With three players remaining, I found myself as the short stack. Then, as the larger stacks clashed, I transitioned into heads-up play as a significant underdog, at a 5:1 disadvantage. When heads-up commenced, the prospect of securing this package felt surreal, prompting me to take some calculated risks that ultimately worked in my favor.
How were you feeling coming into today?
Interestingly, I spent the past four days unwinding on the beautiful beaches of Jacksonville. I was completely at ease until about five minutes before my arrival, when a wave of nervousness hit me unexpectedly.
How have you been playing so far?
Initially, there were a few bumps in the road; however, I managed to double up in Level 4 with pocket kings, which helped me regain my initial stack. As of now, I’ve slightly surpassed that starting point, and I’m eager to see how the rest of the day unfolds.
All the competitors who invested in the $5K buy-in are undoubtedly seasoned players, exhibiting a more aggressive style of play. Nevertheless, I’m feeling confident; I believe anyone who excels on ClubWPT can hold their own in these prestigious WPT Main Events.
What are your goals?
My ultimate aim? To inscribe my name on the illustrious Mike Sexton Cup. Mike Sexton hailed from Indiana, and I’ve been a devoted fan ever since his television appearances. It would truly be an honor to achieve that.
What would cashing this event mean to you?
Cashing in this tournament would be an incredible honor for me. Achieving my first WPT cash would help elevate my name in the industry and mark a significant Hendon score, placing me alongside poker luminaries like Scotty Nguyen and Daniel Negreanu. They may have more significant financial achievements, but I would finally have my number recorded publicly.
Claiming victory at this event would be life-altering and potentially pave my way to Vegas next month for the prestigious WPT World Championship.

What strategies are you implementing to stay mentally sharp for the WPT bestbet Scramble Championship?
E you been preparing for the WPT bestbet Scramble Championship?
I’ve been reviewing hand histories and strategy articles, trying to refresh my memory on specific plays and adjustments I might need to make during the tournament. I feel that staying mentally sharp is just as important as being skilled at the table. Plus, getting in some practice games on ClubWPT also helps me maintain my edge.
What does it mean to you to compete at this level, especially after winning the package again?
It feels incredible to be part of such a prestigious event. Every time I compete, it reminds me of why I fell in love with poker in the first place—the strategy, the thrill, and the community. Winning this package reinforces my belief that hard work and dedication can lead to amazing opportunities, and I’m grateful for the chance to compete against some of the best players in the world. I firmly believe that every experience, win or lose, teaches me something valuable.
Any advice for aspiring players looking to break into tournaments like this?
My advice would be to participate in as many online games as you can, especially on platforms like ClubWPT. The more hands you play, the better your game will become. Study the game relentlessly and watch professional players to see how they approach certain situations. And, most importantly, believe in yourself! Persistence really pays off in this game.
Final thoughts as you gear up for the tournament?
I’m feeling optimistic but also realistic. Every tournament is full of unexpected twists, and I know that I just need to play my best and stay focused. I have my wife cheering me on, which always gives me extra motivation. No matter the outcome, I’m thrilled to be here and living this dream!
Thank you, Michael, for sharing your insights and experiences with us. Best of luck in the championship!
