the essential Renowned fashion designer, Michael Barnaart, founder of the eponymous brand, recently set up shop at Petit Château Le Piot, in Fleurance. Eager to settle in a rural area, he now hopes to develop his art.
Michael Barnaart’s work sits at the junction between haute couture and popular culture thanks to his specialization in knitted dresses. He likes industrial design, graphic design and art. In Holland, his creations can be seen both in the street and in exhibitions in different museums such as the Kunstmuseum Den Haag (Art Museum) in The Hague, but also in London at the Barbican Centre.
Her dresses are worn by female politicians, 8 p.m. news anchors and presenters of popular TV shows such as the Dutch version of “Meilleur Pâtissier”.
Michael Barnaart studied at the Fashion Institute in Amsterdam. “In 2008, I was asked to do Amsterdam Fashion Week,” he says. I made a paper collection which attracted the attention of journalists. So I entered the system, I had to create another kind of collection. In 2010, I became interested in knitting. And in 2011, I opened a small shop in The Hague which has just closed since we moved to Fleurance.”
Develop your art and your works
He keeps his online store which has just had a facelift. From Fleurance, he can work easily with the Internet. In The Hague, he lived in the city center, and longed for the calm of country life, which he greatly appreciated. “Fleurance is perfect, there’s everything on site,” he says.
And then he fell under the spell of Petit Château Le Piot. Moreover, the stylist is looking for information on the history of this residence.
He hopes his creativity will evolve. Inspiration comes from art. Several of his series come from paintings by painters: Man Ray, Mondrian… The artist wishes to make certain images, such as “The Girl with a Pearl Earring”, as simple as possible but recognizable and iconic – he made one pin. “I like big contrasts in colors,” he concludes.
