Miami launches program to pay rent for seniors

The City of Miami opened its rental assistance program for seniors 62 and older from July 16 to August 5.

Currently, the average rent is 35% higher than in the rest of the US, which is why the Senior Rental Assistance Program (SRAP) provides up to $500 per month for one year to help pay the rent of a senior in need.

The program is currently available only to residents of Miami’s District 5, which includes neighborhoods such as Wynwood, Little Haiti, Liberty City, Model City, Overtown and other areas on the Upper East Side.

Forms for rental assistance in Miami can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Miami City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive, Coconut Grove) and at District 5 offices.

Interested parties may also call 311 for addresses where forms are available.

Skyrocketing rent in Miami

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Miami is $2,078 a month, 35% higher than the national average ($1,534), Apartments.com reported.

The City of Miami’s Senior Rental Assistance Program is powered in part by federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Requirements to receive support from the rental program

Applicants must have a lease and meet the limited financial resources requirement.

Household income must be 50 percent or less of the Area Median Income (AMI): $39,750 or less for one person; $45,400 for two; $51,050 for three; $56,750 for four.

The program would pay $500 of the senior’s rent to the landlord. The assistance cannot be used to pay back rent.

Only one application must be submitted per household, which will be considered regardless of the order in which it was submitted, as long as it is submitted by the August 5 deadline.

Individuals residing in public housing or who are beneficiaries of programs such as Plan 8 (Section A, Sec. 202, VASH) are not eligible for Miami’s Senior Rental Assistance Program.
