Miami Heat Pursues Kyrie Irving: The Missing Piece for NBA Finals Glory

After the loss to the Nuggets in the NBA Finals, we wondered what Miami is missing to climb the last step. The need is quite clear: offensive creation. It is therefore not very surprising to hear the name of Kyrie Irving associated with the Heat…

Obviously, the boss of the Heat Pat Riley was aware of the limits which ended up weighing down his team at the stage of the NBA Finals.

According to Shams Charania of The AthleticMiami actually tried to set up a transfer with the Nets last February to recover Kyrie Irving, who asked to be traded just days before the NBA Trade Deadline.

Why is such news coming back to the table four months later?

First because the Heat still wants to strengthen and would seek to recruit a star during the offseason according to Shams. Then because the future of Kyrie Irving – free agent this summer – in Dallas is a question mark.

“The Heat will explore the star market this summer. Just to give you a taste of what they [les dirigeants de Miami, ndlr.] have tried in recent months: they made an offer to the Nets for Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline, just before his transfer to the Mavericks.

The Heat have understood that it is necessary to add a piece alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, […] and the question is, will they come back to Kyrie Irving?”

Miami is not one of the franchises that have enough salary margin to directly sign Kyrie Irving through a big contract. This means that it would be necessary to go through a sign & trade that is never easy to set up, even if for Pat Riley nothing is ever impossible.

Beyond the Kyrie file, the main thing to remember from this news is that Miami will be aggressive on the transfer market to add a star to the Butler-Adebayo duo, all with the aim of returning to NBA Finals and finally winning the title following two defeats (2020, 2023) on the last step. Does that mean that Tyler Herro (Sixth Man of the Year 2022 and paid $27 million from the pro season) can potentially move? Possible, in any case it represents Miami’s main bargaining chip in any potential deal, with the first-round picks (three in total).

It will be interesting to see how Pat Riley will try to achieve his ends, especially since he also has Gabe Vincent and Max Strus files – both free agents – to manage in the coming weeks. It might be hot in South Beach this summer!
